Hailing from San Pedro, CA, 19-year-old Keila Huss had a love of music from a young age, whether it was making up songs in the car or dancing along to her favorite movie musicals. At six years old, she began violin lessons, and was playing in youth orchestras by age nine, soon followed by children’s choir, Orff ensemble, and piano lessons. In her early teens, she moved the LA area with her family where she played in the Asia America Youth Symphony before joining The Colburn School's Orchestra da Camera in downtown LA. During her five years with that orchestra, she served served as Concertmaster, Principal Second Violin, and Principal Viola. Keila has also attended the Idyllwild Arts Academy Summer Program from 2005-09 in their Summer Symphony and Festival Orchestra, the latter of which performed at Disney Hall.
In addition to her orchestral education, Keila also participated in many competitions in her teen years. At age 10, she won 2nd place at the Temecula Youth String Competition, and with a 1st place win the next year (and again two years later). In 2007, she was a winner at the South Bay Junior Bach Festival and was advanced to the Complete Works competition - where she won 3rd place. Throughout her studies, she received high marks and honors in the MTAC Certificate of Merit program levels 3 – Advanced, before moving on to be a winner in their Panel competition and performing at their state convention in San Jose, CA.
In fall of '09, she began her college career at Marymount College in Palos Verdes while, at the same time, transitioning to viola as her primary instrument. While at Marymount, Keila was very active musically, singing and playing in choral ensemble, weekly mass, Spring Recitals, and other special events as well as, in her sophomore year, helping to found the MM Jazz Ensemble. In May of 2010, she graduated with an Associate of Arts degree from Marymount as valedictorian of her class. In the past year, Keila has been enjoying a gap year in her education, keeping busy with private violin and piano students, group teaching, and writing classical concert reviews for the Daily Breeze. In spring 2011, she has also had the opportunity to fill in on viola for the American Youth Symphony, performing in their March, April, and May concerts at UCLA's Royce Hall. This fall, Keila plans to continue her education majoring in Musicology at UCLA.
